Pricing
From $2.99/mo
I'd recommend NordVPN for everyday privacy, streaming and P2P across up to 10 devices, backed by six independent no-logs assurance engagements. Budget for the renewal: Basic jumps to $139.08 a year after the intro term. For anonymity without an email address or a flat price, Mullvad is the better choice.
What is NordVPN?
NordVPN is a subscription VPN service. It encrypts your internet traffic and sends it through remote servers, which hides your IP address and protects your connection on public networks. Every plan includes Threat Protection, and one subscription covers up to 10 devices.
Plans come in tiers. Basic is the VPN plus Threat Protection. Plus adds the NordPass password manager and a Data Breach Scanner. Complete adds 1 TB of encrypted NordLocker cloud storage. Prime, the top tier, adds identity-related tools. You can pay monthly, yearly or every two years. Longer terms are billed upfront, and plans carry a 30-day money-back guarantee.
NordVPN suits individuals and households who want one paid service for private browsing, with password management and encrypted storage available in the same subscription.

NordVPN review
Stanislav VovchykUpdated Nov 6, 20268 min readShould you use NordVPN? Who it fits and where it's restricted
NordVPN is a strong pick for everyday privacy, streaming and P2P on up to 10 devices under one paid subscription. If you need an account with no email address or a price that won't jump at renewal, Mullvad's flat €5/month is the cleaner deal.
What it has going for it: repeated no-logs audits, NordWhisper (its own obfuscation protocol) and security bundles that go up to identity insurance. What counts against it is pricing. Every term is billed upfront and renews at roughly 1.5-3x the intro rate.
Where NordVPN is restricted or unavailable:
- Russia: servers shut on April 1, 2019, after NordVPN refused to join Roskomnadzor's blocklist. Apple removed the app from the Russian App Store in July 2024, and NordVPN says it has fully exited the market.
- India: physical servers were removed in 2022 after CERT-In ordered VPN providers to keep customer data for five years.
- China: the help center gives connection steps (NordWhisper, obfuscated servers, manual IKEv2) but no legal guidance.
- Countries that ban or restrict VPNs to some degree: China, Russia, Belarus, Türkiye, Iraq, UAE, Oman, Iran, Egypt, Turkmenistan, North Korea and Uganda. Third-party lists of these countries vary.
- Prime's identity features (Coveron, TransUnion credit freeze, SSN monitoring) are built for the US.
- The 7-day free trial is offered in only 15 countries.
- The 3-day Google Play trial is not offered in Bangladesh, India, South Korea or Sri Lanka.
Basic, Complete or Prime: what each tier actually adds
Most people only need Basic. Complete is worth it if you'd otherwise pay separately for a password manager and cloud storage. Prime only makes sense for US residents who want identity insurance.
The yearly renewal price more than doubles from Basic to Prime.
| Feature | Basic | Complete | Prime |
|---|---|---|---|
| VPN with NordLynx, 10 devices | Yes | Yes | Yes |
| Scam and phishing protection | Yes | Yes | Yes |
| Dark Web Monitor (up to 5 emails) | Yes | Pro version | Pro version |
| Anti-malware, ad/tracker blocker | No | Yes | Yes |
| Call and message protection (messages Android-only) | No | Yes | Yes |
| NordPass password manager | No | Yes | Yes |
| NordLocker storage | No | 1 TB | 1 TB |
| Coveron identity protection, TransUnion credit freeze help | No | No | Yes |
| Identity-theft insurance | No | No | Up to $1,000,000 |
| Cyber-extortion insurance | No | No | Up to $100,000 |
Basic already includes phishing protection, so Complete mainly adds malware and tracker blocking plus NordPass and NordLocker. The help center's Threat Protection section also covers next-gen antivirus and adult-site blocking.
Prime is a different decision from buying a VPN: it runs your SSN and credit data through Coveron, another Nord Security product. Choose it only if you're comfortable sharing that data.
Dedicated IP is a paid add-on, bought at checkout or in Nord Account. Setup can take up to 3 business days after you choose a location, and the IP is linked to your email.
Plan names in the help center don't match the pricing pages. The billing article says "Complete, Plus, or Standard" and the free-trial article says "Prime, Ultimate Max, Ultra, or Complete Max". The current pricing pages use Basic, Complete and Prime.
What you'll really pay: intro prices, renewals and refunds
The intro price is a first-term discount, not the real cost. Every plan bills the whole term upfront and renews automatically at a much higher rate.
One Basic renewal year costs more than the whole discounted first term.
NordVPN support: 7-day free trial for new users on 1- and 2-year plans, 15 countries, card or PayPal only
| Plan | Monthly plan | 2-year plan (intro) | Renewal per year |
|---|---|---|---|
| Basic | $14.99 | $3.49/mo ($94.23 for 2 years + 3 months) | $139.08 |
| Complete | $19.99 | — | $219.48 |
| Prime | $29.99 | — | $296.28 |
Terms come in 1 month, 1 year and 2 years. 2-year prices for Complete and Prime aren't confirmed, so those cells are empty.
Renewal is charged at the "applicable renewal price", which can change, and NordVPN emails you before it renews. On Basic, a year at the renewal rate costs about 1.5x what you paid upfront for the first two years.
The 30-day money-back guarantee covers only your first subscription purchase. Renewals can't be refunded unless local law requires it. Purchases through Apple's App Store, the Amazon Appstore or a reseller such as Best Buy or StackSocial are refunded by that store. Direct refunds are automated: they take up to about 4 hours to process and up to 10 business days to arrive.
Free trials:
- The 7-day trial is for new users on 1- or 2-year plans, one per customer. It covers France, the US, Canada, Australia, the UK, Japan, the Netherlands, Germany, Denmark, Finland, Norway, Sweden, Spain, Italy and Poland.
- You must pay by card or PayPal. Paying with Google Pay, UnionPay, Sofort or crypto removes the trial.
- First-time Android users get a separate 3-day trial through Google Play.
The payment options are unusually wide: credit cards, cryptocurrency, PayPal, Sofort (Klarna), bank and local bank transfers, prepaid debit cards, Apple Pay, Google Pay, and the Apple App Store, Google Play and Amazon Appstore. Cash works only through retail-store purchases, not online checkout. Which methods you see depends on your region.
Privacy record: audits, jurisdiction and the breach history
NordVPN's no-logs claim has more independent assurance behind it than most mass-market VPNs. Its record also includes a breach it disclosed late and a 2022 policy change on legal requests.
| Review | Firm | Scope | Timing |
|---|---|---|---|
| Earlier no-logs assurance | PwC, then Deloitte | No-logs claims | Before 2025 |
| Sixth no-logs engagement | Deloitte Lithuania (ISAE 3000 Revised) | No-logs claims | Fieldwork Nov 10 – Dec 12, 2025. Report issued Dec 12, 2025, announced Feb 2026 |
| Security assessment | Cure53 | Apps and infrastructure | 2025 |
An assurance engagement checks the vendor's claims against its systems over a fixed window. It is not continuous monitoring.
NordVPN was founded in 2012 and is incorporated in Panama. It is developed by Nord Security, which is run from Lithuania and the Netherlands and merged with Surfshark under one holding company in 2022. Nord Security also makes NordLayer, NordPass, NordLocker, NordStellar, Coveron and Saily, and claims more than 20 million protected users and over 25,000 businesses.
In January 2022, NordVPN changed its policy to comply with legal requests from local authorities while keeping its no-logs stance. If a request comes, the audited no-logs setup is what limits what can be handed over.
| Date | Incident |
|---|---|
| Mar 2018 (disclosed Oct 21, 2019) | An attacker got into one rented server in Finland through an insecure remote-management system the data center had left in place. NordVPN said no user credentials were exposed. TechCrunch reported that expired TLS keys were exposed, and NordVPN disputed the impact. The 19-month disclosure delay drew criticism |
| May 2019, Jan 2023 | The UK Advertising Standards Authority ruled against misleading ad claims about public Wi-Fi risk and "switching off" malware |
| Nov 2019 | About 2,000 account credentials were reportedly exposed through credential stuffing |
| Jan 4–5, 2026 | A BreachForums user claimed to have NordVPN dev-server data (Salesforce/Jira). NordVPN denied any breach and said the data came from a third-party vendor's trial test environment with no real customer data |
The Finland delay is the worst entry. Nothing in the record since then shows confirmed exposure of user traffic.
Protocols and censorship: NordLynx, NordWhisper and obfuscated servers
Use NordLynx day to day and switch to NordWhisper on networks that block VPNs, such as filtered office or campus Wi-Fi. NordWhisper is listed for Windows, macOS, iOS, Android and Linux.
NordVPN notice: Obfuscated Servers move from OpenVPN to the NordWhisper protocol
The Obfuscated Servers category now runs on NordWhisper instead of OpenVPN. Manual OpenVPN connections to obfuscated servers no longer work, so router and third-party-client setups that used them have stopped working.
NordWhisper doesn't work with Dedicated IP, Meshnet or Onion Over VPN servers. If you need a fixed IP and obfuscation together, NordVPN can't give you both on one connection.
For countries with internet restrictions, the help center lists, in order: NordWhisper; obfuscated servers (shown only when the protocol is set to Auto or NordWhisper); OpenVPN TCP; and manual IKEv2. China has its own set of steps.
Apps, devices and features that changed in 2025-2026
The 10-device limit is generous, and a router stretches it further.
NordVPN support: up to 10 devices at once; devices on the same server must each use a different protocol
- 10 simultaneous devices per account.
- A VPN router uses one slot but protects every device on its network, the simplest way around the cap for busy homes.
- Up to 5 devices from one account can share a server, each on a different protocol: HTTP proxy, SOCKS5, NordLynx, NordWhisper, OpenVPN TCP or OpenVPN UDP.
Meshnet: in August 2025, NordVPN announced it would shut Meshnet down on December 1, 2025, then reversed the decision in September 2025 after user backlash. I'd still avoid building critical remote access around a feature the vendor has already tried to retire once.
Server counts: figures range from 7,200 to over 9,300 servers in 118 to 137 countries, with no single number confirmed. Decide on whether the specific countries you need are listed in the app, not on the headline total.
NordVPN vs Surfshark, Proton VPN, Mullvad and ExpressVPN
NordVPN is the best fit for people who want audited no-logs claims plus bundled security in one bill. Each alternative below wins on one specific need.
| Pick | Choose it if you want | Why over NordVPN |
|---|---|---|
| Surfshark | Coverage for a large household | Unlimited simultaneous devices. It shares a parent holding company with Nord Security |
| Proton VPN | Privacy first, and a chance to try before paying | Based in Switzerland, with open-source apps and a free tier |
| Mullvad | Anonymity and predictable cost | Flat €5/month, no account email, and cash payment by mail |
| ExpressVPN | A simple VPN-only app for streaming | A long-standing rival without bundled security upsells |
My recommendation: buy NordVPN Basic on the 2-year plan if you want a well-audited VPN for up to 10 devices and will remember the $139.08 renewal. Choose Complete only if you'll actually use NordPass and the 1 TB of NordLocker. Skip Prime unless you live in the US and want the identity insurance. If the renewal jump or the email-linked account is a dealbreaker, choose Mullvad.
