Dedicated IP

Also called: Dedicated IP address, Static dedicated IP, Personal IP, Dedicated VPN IP

Definition. A dedicated IP is an IP address assigned to one user or account only. On a VPN, it gives you the same exit address every time you connect, with no other customers sharing it, which helps with allowlists and fewer CAPTCHAs.

In short

  • A dedicated IP gives you one fixed VPN exit address that no other customer uses.
  • It helps with IP allowlists, fewer CAPTCHAs and stable logins, but reduces anonymity.
  • Compare locations, add-on price, token-based assignment and whether you can swap the IP.

A dedicated IP is an IP address reserved for a single user or account. Most VPNs put many customers behind the same shared exit address, so websites see hundreds of people arriving from one IP. With a dedicated IP, the VPN server still encrypts and routes your traffic, but the address websites see belongs to you alone and stays the same each time you connect.

VPN providers usually sell it as a paid add-on on top of a normal subscription, typically a few dollars a month, with a limited choice of countries and cities.

How it works

When you buy the add-on, the provider reserves one IPv4 address on a server in the location you pick. In the app you choose the dedicated IP connection instead of a regular server. Your traffic is encrypted as usual, then leaves the VPN network from your reserved address.

Some providers link the IP directly to your account. Others use a token or activation code system, so the IP is assigned to whoever redeems the token and the provider keeps no direct record of which account uses which address. This matters if you care about the provider being able to connect your account to your activity.

The address normally comes from a datacenter range owned or leased by the VPN provider. It is not a home ISP address, unless the provider explicitly sells residential IPs.

When you need one

  • IP allowlists. Company servers, cloud dashboards, databases, banking portals and admin panels often accept logins only from approved IPs. A fixed address can be added once and works from any network.
  • Fewer CAPTCHAs and blocks. Shared VPN IPs get flagged when other users abuse them. A dedicated address has only your history, so Google, banks and shops challenge it less often.
  • Account security checks. Services that alert on logins from new locations, such as payment platforms or ad accounts, see a consistent IP instead of a new one each session.
  • Hosting and remote access. Running a game server, remote desktop or a self-hosted service is easier when the address does not change. Some providers combine this with port forwarding.
  • Streaming. A dedicated IP is less likely to be on a known VPN blocklist at first, though streaming services can still detect datacenter ranges.

For general browsing, a shared IP is usually the better choice, because it blends you into a crowd.

Limits and risks

Less anonymity. Everything sent from a dedicated IP comes from one person. Websites can link your sessions over time by address alone, and anything traced to the IP points to a single customer of the provider. Use a shared server for activity you want kept separate.

Not a residential IP. Dedicated VPN IPs sit in datacenter ranges that IP databases already label as hosting or VPN. Services that block datacenter traffic may still block it.

Fixed location. You get one country and city per IP. Switching location means buying another address or contacting support, and the list of available locations is short compared to the full server network.

Extra cost and lock-in. The add-on is billed separately, often only on longer plans. If you cancel or the provider retires the server, the address is gone, and you must update every allowlist.

Reputation is your responsibility. If the address was used before or you trigger spam filters yourself, there is no pool to rotate to.

What to check when comparing tools

CheckWhy it matters
Available countries and citiesDetermines whether you can get an IP where your target service expects you
Price and billingMonthly add-on vs. bundled; some require a 1 or 2 year plan
Assignment methodToken based assignment limits the link between account and IP
Ability to change the IPUseful if the address gets blacklisted
Port forwardingNeeded for hosting or incoming connections
Device and protocol supportWhether the IP works on routers, all apps and WireGuard or OpenVPN
Logging policyA strong no-logs policy matters more when the IP is unique to you

Also check that the kill switch works with the dedicated connection, so allowlisted services never see your real address after a drop.

  • Dedicated IP vs shared IP: shared IPs are used by many customers at once and change between sessions; dedicated IPs are yours alone and fixed.
  • Dedicated IP vs static IP: some VPNs offer static shared IPs, where the address stays the same but other users share it.
  • Dedicated IP vs residential IP: residential IPs belong to home internet providers and look like normal households; dedicated VPN IPs usually come from datacenters.
  • Dedicated sending IP: in email marketing, a dedicated IP is an address used only for your outgoing mail, so its sending reputation depends only on you. It is a related idea in a different product category.

FAQ

Is a dedicated IP more secure than a shared IP?

The encryption is the same. A dedicated IP improves access control, because services can allowlist your address, but it is less private, since all activity from that IP belongs to you.

How much does a dedicated IP cost on a VPN?

It is usually a paid add-on of a few dollars a month on top of the VPN subscription. Some providers only sell it with longer plans.

Will a dedicated IP unblock streaming services?

Sometimes, because the address is not yet on shared VPN blocklists. It still comes from a datacenter range, so streaming platforms can detect and block it.

Can I use a dedicated VPN IP for email sending?

VPN providers usually block or limit outgoing mail ports. For bulk or transactional email, use a dedicated sending IP from an email service instead.
